Presidential races can get awful contentious. This has always been true. There is something super special about this one though. This one features the allegedly rich, misogynistic, racist, xenophobic, former reality TV star, and toupeed Cheeto, Donald Trump. Donald Trump has, with the help of those who have created the environment for him to thrive, essentially murdered the Republican Party. He has created a party where you must accept racism, sexism, and hate or you can’t belong.
The other night during the debate the tangerine demagogue known as Donald Trump threatened to jail his opponent, Hillary Clinton, if he was elected. That deserves some reflection. A candidate for president threatened to jail his political opponent.
This didn’t happen in some third-world dictatorship, this happened in St. Louis, Missouri. This happened during what is supposed to be one of the shining examples of our way of government, a debate between the two leading candidates for the highest office in our country. This happened on national television with millions of viewers.
A line has most definitely been crossed. Even more disturbing, his followers are thrilled. Not one of them seems to remember that we live in a democratic-republic instead of an autocracy. So many of them failing to understand that not only do the checkpoints in our government keep him from being able to do this but the disastrous implications if he bypasses those checkpoints and does it anyway. He has already threatened to deport immigrants, use religious beliefs to determine entrance to the country, and punish women for their reproductive choices. Now he has threatened to turn our country into a dictatorship and his followers are suggesting the 19th Amendment be repealed to ensure he is able to do it.
Our nation is in danger. His disgusting antics and appearance are no longer a joke. That he’s come so close to leading this nation is frightening and sad. The danger doesn’t end when he loses in November, his followers will still be here. They will still have the same dark thoughts and fears that are leading them to find a leader in Trump. I’m scared for my country.
